Digital Customer Experience Defined for a Canadian Real Estate Enterprise

Mainstreet Equity Corp. is a publicly traded Canadian (TSX:MEQ) residential real estate company. Established in 1998, Mainstreet has grown its portfolio from 272 units with a market value of approximately $17 million to 8,414 units and an approximate market value of $1.15 billion.

Mainstreet Equity Corp. wanted to develop a new website in an effort to cater to the modern Canadian audience, who are tech-savvy and would like to search properties using their mobile devices. Before approaching Net Solutions, they had hired a vendor but were not satisfied with the quality of work. After doing their due diligence, they approached Net Solutions.

The Problem

When Michael Birklein, Director of Marketing & Communications, at Mainstreet Equity Corp., built a mobile strategy for his organization, he was clear that he did not want a responsive website; instead, he wanted the mobile experience to be different from what's offered via desktop browsing.

Process and Engagement Model

The project was executed on a Fixed Price Engagement model since the scope was defined and it was possible to estimate the project. The scope was relatively small; so we adopted the Waterfall Development Model for it.

Project collaboration was done using Basecamp. All project communication was done using email, Go-To-Meeting, and Skype. To accelerate the development process, Michael Birklein, along with his CEO Bob Dhillon, flew down to our office and stayed for a few days, to ensure that all developments met their expectations.

Technology Stack

The User Experience design team conducted various sessions with the Mainstreet team to understand their audience, preferences, and tested different design mockups before arriving at the current design (which is LIVE).

The backend was developed using WordPress CMS. Integration with Web2Text Database was done and the project team set acron (a time-based scheduler), on a daily basis to update the Web2Text database so that the rental data of properties remains updated.

Testing of both the websites was carried out across desktop, phones, and tablets.

Mainstreet's new website impressed their audience. Everyone loved the brand new design thus speaking volumes of the high standards maintained by Mainstreet.
