Executive Summary

yPree, a self-funded dating app startup founded by Corey Spencer, was built on Bluetooth proximity as the primary user matching mechanism. Corey Spencer identified a specific gap in dating apps: GPS was too imprecise for truly immediate nearby connections. Net Solutions validated the concept through a Proof of Concept, solved the Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth communication challenge, and delivered fully functional iOS and Android apps with GPS as a fallback.

The Challenge

GPS-based dating apps could not reliably connect users in the same immediate physical location.

GPS Imprecision

Standard GPS positioning was not accurate enough to reliably identify users in the same immediate space. A different proximity mechanism was needed to deliver on the core product promise.

Unproven Bluetooth Approach

Using Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth communication as a dating app matching mechanism was technically unproven at the time. The concept needed validation before full development investment was justified.

Cross-Platform Requirement

The app needed to work on both iOS and Android with a consistent user experience and equivalent functionality. Two platforms with different permission models had to be handled simultaneously.

Safety and Abuse Prevention

A proximity-based social app created elevated risks of harassment and spam. Robust moderation and reporting tools were essential to user trust and regulatory acceptability.

Our Approach

Net Solutions began with a Proof of Concept to verify that Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth proximity matching was technically feasible. Once confirmed, iOS and Android apps were built with Bluetooth as the primary discovery mechanism, GPS as a fallback for absent local devices, and Quickblox-powered chat. Abuse reporting and moderation were built into the core system. Technologies used – Python, Django, Swift, AWS.

The Solution

Net Solutions delivered validated Bluetooth proximity dating apps for iOS and Android.

01.

Proof of Concept

A technical Proof of Concept was completed to confirm that Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth proximity matching between phones was feasible. This removed the commercial risk of investing in a technology that might not work.

02.

Bluetooth Discovery Engine

iOS and Android apps were built with Bluetooth as the primary mechanism for identifying nearby users. The experience delivered on the core product promise of real-time, room-level proximity matching.

03.

GPS Fallback

When no Bluetooth-connected devices were present, the app fell back to GPS to find the nearest yPree users. The experience remained useful across all physical environments and network conditions.

04.

Quickblox Chat Integration

In-app messaging was powered by Quickblox, providing a fast, reliable communication layer for matched users. The chat experience was native-quality rather than a basic web-based alternative.

05.

Abuse Reporting and Moderation

A reporting workflow allowed users to flag abusive chat content for staff review. Confirmed offenders were removed from the platform, creating a safer environment for all users.

Impact

yPree launched as a product with a genuinely distinct position in the dating app market.

Real-Time Proximity Matching

Users could discover and connect with others in the same physical space in real time for the first time on a consumer dating platform. The product delivered what existing GPS-based apps could not.

Cross-Platform Performance

The app worked consistently across iOS and Android, covering the full range of consumer devices. There was no meaningful gap between the two platform experiences.

Founder Validation

Corey credited Net Solutions’ upfront concept validation and probing questions as the foundation that made the product viable. The Proof of Concept phase saved significant time and protected his self-funded investment.

Why Net Solutions?
Key Differentiators

Net Solutions treated yPree as a product problem first and a development task second. They validated the concept before building and challenged the assumptions that needed challenging. That is what a genuine product partner does. If your app concept depends on technology that needs to be proven before it is built, start with a Proof of Concept.

Have a Technical Concept That's Never Been Built Before? Start with Proof.

The riskiest thing in product development isn’t building something hard; it’s building something hard without first proving it’s possible. Net Solutions validates technical feasibility before a full development commitment, giving founders and product leaders the confidence to invest with clarity. If your concept lives at the edge of what’s been done before, let’s prove it first.
