Executive Summary

Interior designer Rosslyn had a clear product vision for a digital tool for creating and presenting mood boards faster than any manual alternative – ‘SampleBoard’, a SaaS mood board and design concept tool for interior design professionals worldwide. Net Solutions worked with Rosslyn to build the MVP using Adobe Flex, a technology most firms would have refused, and delivered a product that Google selected for its first startup incubator in Cape Town.

The Challenge

No purpose-built digital mood board tool existed for interior designers. Alternatives were improvised, time-consuming, and not designed for professional design workflows.

01.

Improvised Workflow Problem

Interior designers were using tools like PowerPoint and Photoshop as manual substitutes, creating significant friction and time cost. A dedicated digital alternative for the design workflow simply did not exist.

02.

Technology Complexity

Building a rich drag-and-drop graphical interface for the web required Adobe Flex expertise that most development firms did not have. The technology choice would determine whether the product was even buildable.

03.

Full GUI Requirements

The MVP had to support object manipulation including layering, rotation, resizing, reversing, and animation, all within a browser-based interface. These features together represented a significant engineering challenge.

04.

Post-MVP Enhancement Path

The initial build needed to support a roadmap of advanced photo editing effects and filter capabilities. The foundation had to be extensible, not just functional for launch.

Our Approach

Net Solutions selected Adobe Flex as the technology to deliver the rich internet application experience the product required, choosing capability over convenience. They worked with Rosslyn in Chandigarh to define the backlog and MVP, built a Java and MySQL backend, and used GreenSock animation libraries for fluid UX. Post-MVP enhancements were added iteratively based on user feedback.

The Solution

Net Solutions delivered a professional-grade SaaS mood board tool with a rich graphical interface.

01.

Drag-and-Drop Canvas

A full graphical canvas was built supporting object movement, resizing, rotation, layer control, and reversal. The interaction model followed industry-standard design tool conventions for immediate usability.

02.

GreenSock Animation

Fluid, responsive animations were implemented using GreenSock libraries, making every interaction feel polished and professional. The UX quality matched what designers expected from dedicated design software.

03.

Java and MySQL Backend

A robust Java and MySQL backend supported the Flex-based front-end with fast, reliable data handling. The architecture was built to scale from early adopters to a global professional audience.

04.

Photo Effects and Filters

Post-MVP phases added background removal, tone adjustments, filter effects, and image manipulation tools. SampleBoard evolved from a basic mood board into a more comprehensive design workspace.

05.

Collaborative Sharing

Designers could share completed mood boards with clients for presentation and feedback. Collaboration was built into the product, extending its value beyond individual use.

They had excellent technical skills throughout the team and the graphic design quality was very high. Their understanding of my brief was incredible, which led to a glitch-free development. The expectation of the site was met.

Founder Endorsement

Rosslyn credited Net Solutions with the willingness to think outside the box and the ability to create exactly what was wanted. The partnership was described as technically and creatively aligned.

Why Net Solutions?
Key Differentiators

Net Solutions were willing to use Adobe Flex when most developers would have declined, and they had the expertise to make it work. That combination of technical courage and execution quality is what took SampleBoard from concept to incubator selection. If your product needs technology most development firms will not attempt, we are the team to call.

Have a SaaS Vision That Requires Non-Standard Technology to Execute?

Some product concepts can’t be built with off-the-shelf frameworks; they require teams willing to go deeper into the technology stack to find the right solution. Net Solutions has the engineering range and creative problem-solving to build SaaS products that standard approaches can’t accommodate. If your vision requires thinking outside the conventional toolset, let’s find the right way to build it.
