The rapid development of mobile devices certainly has its advantages and disadvantages. For many companies, they see it as an opportunity to embrace the mobile revolution, especially since a lot of people today are always with their mobile devices. In fact, from a study made by IDG Research Services, 70% of the organizations that they queried mentioned that they are or will be using enterprise applications in the near future.
If your company hasn’t done so, then maybe it is time for you to consider having us to do your enterprise level work. We are an expert in the field and to convince you further, we will tell you some of the things that matter in an Enterprise Mobility app.
Not everyone uses the same device at the office. Because the market is being dominated by the two giants, iPhone and Android, it also means that your Enterprise Mobility application can be used with at least these two devices. The other solution is to offer a particular platform to the employees. A lot of companies have already used this approach but in the long run, this is more expensive as compared with having applications that are cross-platform.
There are many approaches that your company can take. While the best way is to program the application using its native language, it can be costly. The solution is to utilize some of the cross-platform HTML5 mobile framework such as Phone Gap to get things done for you. Through the framework, you can create a single Enterprise Mobility application that would work across multiple platform.
2. Consistent Connectivity
When working on-the-go, one of the biggest things that matter is consistent connectivity to the internet. For an Enterprise Mobility application to work well, it has to be connected to a stable internet connection. The best way for this is to ensure that the employees use a major carrier in the country with the best internet coverage. When we say internet coverage, we do not mean having EDGE connection but a consistent 3G coverage instead.
Having a fast connection is also important so that attachments can be sent to and from the employees. Where applicable, subscribe to a carrier that supports 4G. If not, make sure that the internet speed of the carrier is fast enough so that files can be transferred easily and quickly.
3. Employee Privacy
One of the biggest concerns that employees always have is whether their personal data can be accessed by the company or not. This means that you need to disclose the type of data that the Enterprise Mobility application can and cannot access so that there is transparency between the company and the employee. However, in the case of a security breach, there will be a need to access the personal data of the suspected individuals and this matter needs to be cleared out as well.
In addition to that, another question that a lot of employees will question is whether their devices are being tracked or not. Sometimes, there will be a need for tracking but most often than not, this applies only to certain employees. As mentioned before, this information needs to be disclosed. However, the most important thing that you might need to have is access to wipe the contents of the device. Remote wipe is not something new and the iOS and Android platform already has it for a while already.
4. Controlling the application, not the device
As mentioned before, cross-platform is the way to go and because of this, you need to ensure that you are not controlling the devices that are being used but rather the application that your employees use, specifically speaking, the Enterprise Mobility application. This is because by not controlling the devices, you can ensure that the personal data inside the user’s mobile device remains untouched.
In addition to that, securing a device can be very hard especially if you are working across different platforms and devices. Instead of doing that, you should instead focus on the data inside the application. This means ensuring that the data is secured and is sent through an encrypted connection. It can be through a virtual private network (VPN) or through any other secure channels. This is one of the things that matter in an Enterprise Mobility application. Securing your application correctly means that other people cannot tap into the confidential data that is sent to and from your employee.
5. Features required in the Enterprise Mobility application
Another thing that matters in an Enterprise Mobility application is the features present inside it. Communication protocols such as SIP can be implemented if there is a need for voice of video conferencing over a secured network. In addition to that, features that can increase productivity such as tasks, contacts and project management need to be taken into consideration as well. Suffice to say, your organization can decide how much information can be transferred outside of the office so that the employees can work on-the-go. For a more secured approach, you can limit the information transfer to an extent that no confidential files can be transferred outside of the office.
6. Measuring the Cost-Benefit of Enterprise Mobility application
Last but not least, there need to be a constant monitoring of the cost-benefit of having Enterprise Mobility applications. Some of the factors that need to be accounted for include costs of having this program as well as the productivity that it generates. This is because the application is an investment made by the company and any business benefits or loss should be taken into consideration in the long run.
Advantages of having Enterprise Mobility application
With this being said and done, there are a lot of advantages of having an Enterprise Mobility application for your employees. The key point of having it in the first place is to enable the employees to have constant access to their workplace even when they are not in the office. It also means an increase in productivity among employees especially when they can transfer data among one and another in a secure channel.
In addition to that, employees will also be happier as a result of having access to their work. However, it also means that you should allow them to bring the devices that they prefer instead of making a certain platform compulsory. This is because the devices that they use are the ones that they prefer and is also bought with their hard-earned money. Thus, not allowing this type of working environment can cause some discontent amongst the employees.
Disadvantages of Enterprise Mobility application
Everything has their pros and cons and the same goes to Enterprise Mobility application. The biggest problem is information security. This is because the information will be travelling outside of the office in a digital form and that can easily be replicated by anyone, including the competitors. In a highly competitive environment, you may want to put some serious security features on the application and that can cost a lot of money.
This then brings us to the second point: money. Developing an application that can work across multiple platforms can be costly and maintaining it will also cost more money. However, as mentioned earlier, the cost-benefit of the Enterprise Mobility application needs to be highlighted so that the investment rewards itself well.
